Telluride Kayak School and Telluride Academy have offered youth whitewater kayaking programs since 1998. This year we will be offering three kayak specific programs.
Beginner Clinic The first clinic will be for beginners 11-13 y/o. Day 1 will begin on flat-water with the basics; wet exits, boat control, paddle stokes, and braces. These skills are then applied on Day 2 to a calm section of river near the town of Telluride. Day 3 we will drive to the Hanging Flume section of the Dolores where the students will experience a true desert river. The fundamentals of eddy turns, boat handling, and river running will be the focus. This course does not include any over-nights.
Intermediate Clinic will be available for students who have previously attended a kayak program and are ready to go straight to the river. This 5 day kayak trip explores the Dolores and Animas rivers. We will do a variety of river runs where we focus on the Eskimo Roll, basic rescue skills, and surfing
Team Telluride This clinic is designed for high school and middle school students who have had prior kayaking experience. This course will meet two afternoons a week for two consecutive weeks and will give students the opportunity to progress on the river. We will spend time working on the basics of a good roll and efficient paddle strokes then advance to the San Miguel to improve river-running and playboating skills. We will also spend time learning river safety & rescue techniques during our time on the river.
